Farmers Hit as Rain, Hail Damage Over 2.49 Lakh Hectares of Rabi Crops
Unseasonal rain and hailstorms have damaged rabi crops across multiple states, with early assessments indicating losses over 2.49 lakh hectares, raising concerns for farmers ahead of harvest.
Wheat crops have taken the biggest hit, followed by losses in horticulture produce, as adverse weather conditions swept parts of north and central India in recent days.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the extent of damage is still being assessed, with different agencies conducting ground-level evaluations. The current estimate is based on data compiled till April 8.
The Centre has asked officials to carry out a detailed review of the situation and coordinate with state governments to gather updated field reports. Discussions have also been held with state agriculture ministers on the evolving situation.
Weather conditions are expected to remain unstable in parts of north-west India. The India Meteorological Department has forecast rain, thunderstorms and hail under the influence of a western disturbance affecting regions including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and hill states till April 10.
The developments come at a time when rabi crops, including wheat, are nearing harvest in several regions.
