"Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest" Film Set for June 6, 2029 Theatrical Release

Owen Harris directs and Beau Willimon writes as the Targaryen origin story gets a theatrical release.

Los Angeles, Sep 30: The world of "Game of Thrones" is set to make its big-screen debut with "Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest", the first feature film based in Westeros. It will be released in theatres worldwide on June 6, 2029.

Owen Harris, who has directed episodes of HBO's "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms", will helm the film. The screenplay is by Beau Willimon, the creator of the political drama "House of Cards" and a writer on "Andor", Variety reported.

Details of the plot are scarce, but the film is expected to focus on Aegon I Targaryen, who founded the Targaryen dynasty and conquered Westeros several centuries before the events of the original "Game of Thrones" series. Aegon was the first Targaryen ruler to bring much of Westeros under a single crown, and he forged the Iron Throne from the swords of his vanquished foes. His conquest and the early years of the dynasty are recorded in George R R Martin's "Fire & Blood". The character has never been seen on screen, and the actor who will play him has not yet been announced.

Adapted from Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels, "Game of Thrones" aired on HBO from 2011 to 2019 and became one of the most successful fantasy series in television history. Its cast included Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner, among others.

The Targaryens have remained at the heart of HBO's efforts to expand the franchise. "House of the Dragon", set roughly 200 years before the original series, chronicles the Targaryen civil war and stars Matt Smith, Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke. Its third season aired in 2026, and HBO has renewed it for a fourth season in 2028.

Meanwhile, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms", based on Martin's "Tales of Dunk and Egg" novellas, is set about a hundred years before "Game of Thrones". It follows hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire Egg, and has been renewed for a second season.
