Paris Olympics 2024 Hockey, India vs New Zealand: Hardeep Singh and Vivek put India in a strong position while captain Harmanpreet Singh hammered a crucial goal to mark India's victory against New Zealand in the first group stage match on Saturday.
India beat New Zealand 3-2 in a nail-biting match wherein New Zealand was off to a dominating start but was stopped after the second quarter. In the first quarter, New Zealand's Sam Lane scored a goal by taking the benefit of a penalty corner. Likewise, Mandeep Singh leveled the score as he also converted the penalty corner into a goal.
Likewise, India added to their lead as Vivek scored a close encounter at a penalty corner. The goal was challenged but it was declared the legal goal because of the non-availability of a clear picture.
India was in the lead with 1 point but Simon Chile came as an out-of-syllabus question as he hit a goal with in the fourth quarter to level the scorecard. Until the last few minutes of the fourth quarter, India and New Zealand both were making it tough for their opponents.
However, New Zealand conceded a penalty corner which later turned into a penalty stroke which was taken by the captain of Team India, Harmanpreet Singh, who took the perfect advantage of the situation and hammered the much-needed goal.
