NEW-DELHI: In a move aimed at invigorating electoral participation, the Election Commission has announced the appointment of cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar as its 'National Icon.' This strategic selection of Tendulkar, an iconic figure from the world of sports, intends to counter the prevailing voter apathy among urban and young demographics.

The timing of Tendulkar's designation as 'national icon' aligns with the forthcoming assembly elections scheduled in five states during the October-November period, as well as the anticipated Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

Underpinning this collaboration is a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) inked between Tendulkar, widely known as the 'Master Blaster,' and the Election Commission. Over the course of the next three years, Tendulkar's role will encompass the dissemination of voting awareness among citizens.

Speaking at the momentous occasion, Tendulkar emphasized the paramount significance of active participation in the democratic process. He stated, "India stands as the largest democracy globally, and it is incumbent upon us to exercise our right to vote."

Drawing upon his cricketing legacy, Tendulkar likened this new responsibility to his commitment on the field, asserting that he will continue to "bat for India" in this second innings of his illustrious career.

Anup Chandra Pandey, Election Commissioner, likened the endeavor to a challenging cricket pitch where the Election Commission endeavors to entice voters to fulfill their civic duty. Expressing unwavering faith in Tendulkar's abilities, Pandey expressed confidence that the cricket icon would excel on this unique pitch, just as he has done on the cricketing field.
