Bhavani Devi Scripts History, Becomes First Indian Fencer to Win Medal in Asian Championship

NEW-DELHI: CA Bhavani Devi, India's illustrious Olympian, etched her name in the annals of Indian sports history by winning a bronze medal in the women's sabre event at the Asian Fencing Championship held in Wuxi, China. This remarkable achievement marks India's first-ever medal in this prestigious competition. Despite narrowly missing out on the finals, Bhavani displayed tremendous grit and determination throughout her campaign.

In a fiercely contested semifinal match against Uzbekistan's Zainab Debekova, Bhavani fought valiantly but narrowly fell short, losing by a mere one-point margin of 14-15. Nonetheless, her performance up to that point secured her place in the history books as the first Indian fencer to claim a medal at the Asian Championship.

A significant turning point in Bhavani's journey came during the quarterfinals when she triumphed over the reigning world champion, Misaki Imura from Japan, with an impressive score of 15-10. This victory against a formidable opponent marked Bhavani's first-ever win against Misaki, as she had previously faced defeat in their previous encounters.
