Punjabi once rejected by Punjab, BCCI becomes Canada's National Team captain; “I have a point to prove”

Cricket News: Dilpreet Singh Bajwa, a 24-year-old from Gurdaspur, has been appointed captain of the Canadian National Cricket Team, making him an overnight star back in his hometown.

He will lead the team in the upcoming T20 World Cup, to be held jointly in India and Sri Lanka.

According to The Tribune, Cricket Canada, the governing body of the sport in the country, voted 6–3 in his favour during a selection committee meeting held on January 14.

The report noted that Bajwa faced constant rejection from Punjab and BCCI selectors. It added that despite performing well in domestic tournaments, he was not considered to represent Punjab.

He later decided to migrate to Canada in 2020 for a better future.

Born in Gurdaspur, Dilpreet completed his schooling in Batala, Dhariwal, and Gurdaspur city.

Dilpreet said he is eagerly looking forward to playing against India and has a point to prove.

“The country ridiculed my talent. They did not select me for the BCCI trounaments. Lesser mortals were given a chance. Not everyone has the courage to risk it all for the game they love. I took the risk and flew to Canada to make a new beginning,” Dilpreet is quoted as saying in the report.

He also expressed his gratitude to his coach, Rakesh Marshal, who was very happy after receiving the news. Dilpreet said he will send air tickets, hotel accommodation, and match passes for all the matches Canada will be playing in the World Cup.

“This will be my tribute to him,” said Dilpreet, according to The Tribune.

The Canadian team will arrive in India in the first week of February 2026. Canada is scheduled to play its first match against South Africa on February 9.
