NEW-DELHI: The New Zealand team has suffered a major setback before the ODI World Cup. The team's star player Kane Williamson have been ruled out of the ODI World Cup due to a knee injury. New Zealand shared this information on Thursday.

Williamson returned to his home country of New Zealand with the injury and a scan confirmed that he would need surgery on his right knee. According to a statement from New Zealand Cricket, the right-handed batsman will undergo surgery in the next three weeks. After this it may take at least 6 months for him to recover. He would not be available for the World Cup.

Kane Williamson has given a statement after his injury. Williamson said, "I have received a lot of support in the last few days and for that I want to thank both Gujarat Titans and New Zealand Cricket. Naturally, it's disappointing to have an injury like this, but I'm now focused on getting the surgery done and starting my rehabilitation. It will take some time but I will try my best to get back on the field as soon as possible."

In the first match against Chennai Super Kings, Kane Williamson was injured trying to take a catch on the boundary line. His right knee had suffered critical injuries. Williamson could not bat in the second innings due to injury. He was replaced by Sai Sudarshan as the dominant player.

Notably, Earlier, The New Zealand team reached the finals of the 2019 World Cup. Williamson was named player of the tournament. He scored 578 runs in 9 innings. During this time, he also scored two centuries and two fifties.
