Asylum cases from India and Punjab in Canada: In a significant and unprecedented development, Canada has witnessed an explosive surge in asylum seekers from India, including Punjabis, with a surge of over 500 percent in the second quarter of 2024, as compared to the same period last year.

The sheer volume of asylum claims filed at Canadian airports by Indian nationals has set new records. This has raised concerns and prompted discussions about the underlying causes and potential implications for both Canada and India.

Not only from India, claims by Bangladeshis at Canadian airports have also increased by over 1,200 percent and by nearly 700 percent from Nigerians.

This year, the number of Indians seeking asylum at Canadian airports has broken all records. From January 2024 to June 2024, 16,800 Indians have sought asylum at Canadian airports. 30 percent of them are from Punjab alone.
