Why do young people need drugs so much?

Editorial: When will the giants who supply drugs in Punjab be eliminated?

Punjab Drugs News: Biometric attendance has now been made mandatory for patients coming to get their quota of drugs or medicine from the 'Outpatient Opioid Assisted Treatment' (OT) centers of Punjab. This is a good decision because it will keep a complete eye on the drugs present in the stores of these centers. How to rid the youth of drug addiction is the biggest question at present.

It is very important to keep a watchful eye on the fact that they are not getting addicted to the drugs being given instead of synthetic drugs. Why do our youth focus on drugs? This is also a big question. Where is there any fault in the educational, social, and cultural structure of our society that we have not yet been able to explain to our youth that there should be no need for artificial peace of the mind? Why don't they get addicted to work like our ancestors, why don't they get addicted to name, why don't they get addicted to patriotism?

Now, the children are moving away from the stories of their grandparents and looking for false peace from their mobile phones. Alleged connivance of the police and drug traffickers has been completed. Now, although the current Punjab government has tried to a large extent to eliminate the scope of alleged collusion between the police and criminals, properties of drug traffickers are being confiscated within a week. It was very important to break such collusions and such decisions should have been taken much earlier.

The way the news of the distribution of drugs goes viral during Panchayat, Vidhan Sabha, and Parliamentary elections - it seems as if the entire Punjab has come under the grip of drugs. In fact, a section of our society has now associated alcohol with masculinity, wealth, and leadership. But there is no place for such idiots in an educated and civilized society.

If we take a look at the statistics of young people who are victims of drug addiction in Punjab, then there does not seem to be much difference in the condition of the state. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) released the data for the year 2022 in December 2023. According to him, the number of deaths due to drug overdose that year was the highest in the entire country with a figure of 122.

Similarly, Rajasthan was second with 117 deaths and Madhya Pradesh was third with 74 deaths. In the same year, a total of 681 people died due to drug overdose in India, of which 116 were women. Apart from this, Punjab was third in terms of the number of cases registered under the NDPS Act. Apart from this, in the case of deaths due to consumption of poisonous or adulterated liquor, Punjab was in the third position with a figure of 90.

However, a total of 12,442 cases of NDPS were registered in Punjab, out of which 5,009 cases were related to possession of drugs for personal use. Why do young people need drugs so much? These drugs have corrupted at least two generations of Punjab. Teachers can also play a big role in keeping the youth away from drugs. Such material can be included in the curricula of schools and colleges that make them hate drugs.

By making a complete mission, if the education policy is designed and implemented in this way, then definitely the mentality of drug abuse can be dealt with. Therefore, different sections of the society have to be supported equally. Monsters who supply drugs to children, youth, and others will have to be killed.
