The discrimination against the Sikhs in UK still going on as a primary school banned an eight year old Sikh student from wearing religious bangle ‘kara’ as the school cited that it breaches their policy. Kaiden Singh was asked to remove the ‘kara’ in the school.
He is studying in Summerhill Primary School in Tipton in West Midlands. Sunnie Singh, father of Kaiden has been fighting against the ban on the grounds of discrimination. “I was totally gobsmacked and completely shocked. It is a religious symbol and a religious principle. We wear it for religious reasons; it’s not to make a statement or for fashion,” Sunnie said. He said that he had told his son to refuse to remove his ‘kara’ at any cost.
He further told that the school authorities threatened Kaiden that they would not allow him in the class if he wears the ‘kara’.
Last week, a baptized Sikh girl had become the victim of discrimination at Heathrow Airport, London when she was denied drinking water on board by British Airways staff. Harsharan Kaur, a journalist by profession had posted the entire incident on her Facebook account.
She mentioned that she was denied drinking water on board by the staff of British Airways who deliberately ignored her because of her Sikh identity. Kaur said, “I asked the air hostess for water but she didn’t return to me. When I asked them why you are ignoring me, the air hostess didn’t reply and told me to not take it personally.”
It is unfortunate that the United Kingdom have two Sikh Member Parliaments, Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi and Preet Kaur Gill and despite that the cases of discrimination going on in the country. The both MPs have been struggling for the rights of the Sikhs and even the UK government has acknowledged the Sikhs.
The Sikhs have been contributing their efforts in UKs economy and even some prominent Sikhs are top most businessman.
