COVID-19 Health Threat In United States Latest News : COVID-19 remains a critical health threat in the United States, accounting for three out of five respiratory illnesses among veterans during the recent cold and flu season. A new study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine indicates that unvaccinated veterans faced the highest risk for severe hospitalization and even death.
A recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine has highlighted the continued danger of COVID-19 in the United States, revealing that the virus is causing more illness and death compared to both influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The research, which focused on veterans receiving care through the U.S. Veterans Health Administration (VHA), discovered that COVID-19 accounted for approximately 60% of respiratory illnesses in this group during the 2023-24 period.
The study, led by Dr. Kristina Bajema, who is the medical director of antimicrobial stewardship at the Veterans Affairs Portland Health Care System, also found that COVID-19 resulted in a higher number of fatalities than either influenza or RSV, especially among individuals who had not been vaccinated against the virus.
The researchers found that COVID-19 was more prevalent than both influenza and RSV, leading to more severe health outcomes, including increased rates of hospitalization and death. They concluded that, despite the availability of vaccines and treatments, COVID-19 remains a serious threat, particularly among those who have not received the COVID-19 vaccine.
Dr. Bajema and her team emphasized that the findings of the study reinforce the importance of continued public health efforts to address COVID-19, particularly among vulnerable populations like military veterans, who may face higher risks. The study's results further underscore the ongoing need for individuals to stay updated on their vaccinations and take preventive measures to protect themselves from the virus, as it continues to circulate alongside other respiratory illnesses such as influenza and RSV.
