AAP-Led Punjab Govt Launches Smart Surveillance Project in Mohali for Urban Safety
Mohali, Punjab: In a landmark move showcasing its commitment to modern governance and urban safety, the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government today launched the first phase of the long-awaited City Surveillance and Traffic Management Project in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali). The initiative, pegged at Rs 21.60 crore, marks a crucial step toward transforming Mohali into a safer, smarter, and more accountable city.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, who inaugurated the first phase of the project, emphasized that it is the AAP government that has finally turned this long-pending dream into a reality. “Previous governments made promises, but it is under our administration that the blueprint has materialised into a fully operational, AI-powered infrastructure,” said Mann.
The first phase connects 351 high-resolution CCTV cameras at 17 critical junctions across the city, all integrated with a state-of-the-art Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) located in Sector-79. The system is powered by advanced artificial intelligence for real-time surveillance, traffic monitoring, and enforcement.
“This is not just a surveillance project; it’s a comprehensive public safety reform. From curbing traffic violations to deterring crime, the technology will act as both a preventive and corrective tool,” Mann said.
Tech-Driven Enforcement to Replace Manual Policing
The project includes:
175 Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras
50 Red Light Violation Detection (RLVD) cameras
92 bullet cameras for general area monitoring
18 PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras for broader surveillance coverage
16 Speed Violation Detection cameras across two high-speed zones
The surveillance system will also introduce an automated e-challan mechanism, integrated with the National Informatics Centre's vehicle database, making manual intervention unnecessary and eliminating the scope of human error or bias.
Offences like red light jumping, over-speeding, triple riding, wrong-side driving, helmetless riding, and zebra crossing violations will now be detected and penalized electronically. “With 5,000 to 6,000 challans expected to be issued daily, traffic discipline will see a drastic improvement,” the Chief Minister said.
Second Phase and Future Expansion
The AAP government has also confirmed that planning for Phase 2 is already underway, aiming to expand this technological safety net across other parts of the district. The broader vision includes smart traffic lights, AI-based adaptive traffic controls, and Vehicle Actuated Control (VAC) systems, especially at high-congestion zones in Mohali, Kharar, Zirakpur, and Dera Bassi.
“The system will not only make our roads safer but will also enhance urban mobility by reducing congestion through data-driven decisions,” Mann stated.
Commitment to Smart Urban Governance
Highlighting Mohali’s rapid transformation into a hub of commerce, IT, and real estate, the Chief Minister stressed that this project is not just a tech upgrade—but a governance reform. “We are laying the foundation for a new model of city administration—smart, responsive, and transparent,” Mann said, adding that similar systems would soon be introduced in other urban centers across Punjab.
The Chief Minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s vision of leveraging technology to ensure law and order, safer roads, and better quality of life for citizens. “This is just the beginning. Punjab’s cities will no longer lag behind when it comes to smart, people-first governance.”
With the successful launch of this long-overdue initiative, the AAP-led Punjab government has signaled a clear break from the delays and indecision of past administrations, ushering in a bold new era of urban safety and efficiency.
