Russia and Ukraine Trade Accusations of Ceasefire Violations as Truce Ends, latest news:

Russia and Ukraine accused each other of thousands of violations during the one-day Easter ceasefire declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the Kremlin later confirming there was no order to extend the pause in frontline fighting, Reuters reported.
President Putin had initially ordered a halt to military activity along the war front on Saturday, lasting until midnight Moscow time on Sunday. However, no further pause was announced.

Citing Russia’s TASS state news agency, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying, “There were no other commands,” when asked whether the ceasefire would be extended.

According to the report, Ukraine experienced no air raid alerts on Sunday. However, shortly after midnight, the Ukrainian Air Force issued alerts for the eastern and southeastern regions, warning of missile and drone strikes. Alerts were also issued for Kyiv, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Cherkasy, Mykolaiv, and Zaporizhzhia, according to the BBC.
Early Monday, authorities in several Ukrainian cities — including the capital, Kyiv — urged residents to take cover in shelters amid warnings of potential drone strikes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that Ukrainian forces had recorded nearly 3,000 violations of Russia's own ceasefire declaration. He said Ukraine’s military was instructed to mirror Russian army actions. In a Telegram post, he wrote, “We will respond to silence with silence. Our strikes will be to protect against Russian strikes.”
Zelenskiy alleged that most Russian shelling and assault operations occurred along the frontlines near the embattled eastern town of Pokrovsk.

On Sunday, Zelenskiy also proposed that Russia halt the war for at least 30 days. He had reiterated Ukraine’s willingness to pause strikes several times before. He stated that if Russia refuses, it would demonstrate its intention to continue destroying lives and prolonging the war.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry accused Ukraine of breaking the ceasefire over 1,000 times, claiming that Ukrainian attacks resulted in civilian deaths and infrastructure damage. The ministry said Ukrainian forces fired at Russian positions 444 times and launched 900 drone attacks. “As a result, there are deaths and injuries among the civilian population, as well as damage to civilian facilities,” the ministry said, as reported.

The continued hostilities are complicating efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump, who has expressed a desire to mediate a peace deal between the two countries.
