US Air Strikes Kill 38 in Yemen, One of the Deadliest Attacks, Says Al Jazeera, Latest News:
Air strikes by the United States on Thursday killed at least 38 people, making it one of the deadliest attacks on Yemen by US forces, Al Jazeera reported, citing Houthi-affiliated media. Additionally, 102 people were injured in the strikes, Al Masirah TV reported, quoting Yemen’s Hodeidah Health Office.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated on social media that “US forces took action to eliminate this source of fuel for the Iran-backed Houthi terrorists,” adding, “The objective of these strikes was to degrade the economic source of power of the Houthis.”
According to Al Jazeera correspondent Mohammed al-Attab reporting from Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, the US strikes reportedly hit several locations, with the main focus being the Ras Isa oil port. “The first four air raids were waged while people were working,” he said.
The report noted that nearly 70 percent of Yemen’s imports and 80 percent of its humanitarian aid pass through the ports of Ras Isa, Hodeidah, and As-Salif. Al Masirah TV also shared video footage on social media showing the aftermath of the strike, with a caption in Arabic describing it as “the US aggression’s crime targeting the Ras Isa oil port, resulting in a number of martyrs and dozens of port workers and employees being injured.”
According to Al Jazeera, this attack marks the deadliest US strike on the Houthis since President Donald Trump took office in January 2025. The report also cited Houthi officials claiming that 50 people were killed in a two-day US attack in March.
The United Nations Development Programme described the Ras Isa oil facility as “critical and irreplaceable infrastructure” for Yemen.
Houthi official Mohammed Nasser al-Atifi, quoted by Al Masirah TV, said the “American enemy’s crimes” will not deter the Yemeni people from supporting Gaza, but “rather will strengthen their steadfastness and resilience,” according to the report.
Hours after the deadly US air strikes, Israel reported intercepting a missile launched from Yemen. Since November 2023, the Houthis have carried out over 100 attacks on vessels they claim are linked to Israel, in retaliation for the war on Gaza. The US has warned that its military actions will continue unless the Houthis stop targeting ships in the Red Sea, the report said.
The Houthis have targeted commercial vessels in the Red Sea — a vital trade route handling around 12% of global shipping — disrupting international maritime traffic. The US, citing threats to global trade and regional stability, has responded with airstrikes on militant groups like the Houthis and Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), framing them as preemptive or retaliatory counterterrorism measures. The Houthis, in turn, justify their attacks as retaliation for US and allied support for Israel in the Gaza conflict and in response to ongoing blockades and military pressure.
