Justin Trudeau Stands Firm Amid India-Canada Diplomatic Crisis Following Nijjar's Murder
India has consistently denied the allegations and criticized Canada for not providing any credible evidence to support these claims.
India Canada Diplomatic Crisis Latest News: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has intensified accusations against the Indian government, accusing it of "coercive behaviour" and involvement in "threatening and violent acts." This escalation follows a diplomatic showdown between the two nations, triggered by the 2023 murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani terrorist and Canadian citizen. Both countries have expelled each other’s diplomats, marking a significant escalation in the conflict.
During a press conference, Trudeau called New Delhi's actions a "fundamental error" and stated they were "unacceptable." He reinforced claims by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) that "agents of the Government of India" pose a substantial threat to public safety in Canada. Trudeau framed the diplomatic expulsions as necessary steps to protect Canadian citizens.
The Prime Minister's statements come at a politically challenging time, with declining approval ratings and two electoral losses ahead of next year's elections. Trudeau urged India to cooperate with the ongoing investigation and to acknowledge the evidence shared in the murder case. He emphasized that "extrajudicial operations abroad" must be aligned with international law moving forward.
India has consistently denied the allegations and criticized Canada for not providing any credible evidence to support these claims. New Delhi condemned the accusations as a "preposterous" attempt to malign India for political gain, arguing that the real issue lies in Canada's leniency toward pro-Khalistani elements operating freely on its soil.
The diplomatic tensions escalated after both countries expelled six top diplomats each, following India’s decision to recall its envoys from Canada. Canada responded by serving expulsion notices to Indian diplomats. Canadian authorities claim to have evidence linking Indian intelligence services to Nijjar's murder, but India has rejected these assertions, maintaining that no evidence has been shared by Canada since the allegations first surfaced in September 2023.
As the diplomatic rift deepens, both countries stand firm in their respective positions, with no immediate signs of resolution.
