BEIJING: Xi Jinping was elected president of China for the third consecutive term on Friday (March 10), making him the country's most powerful leader in generations. The motion to make him president for a third term was passed by 2,977 votes.

After Xi Jinping was given another five-year term as head of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in October last year, China's rubber-stamp parliament appointed him as President. Since October, 69-year-old Xi Jinping has faced widespread protests over the death toll of countless people since he implemented and then ended his Zero-Covid Policy.

However, these issues were avoided in the National People's Congress (NPC) meeting held this week. In the same meeting, Li Qiang, who is said to be close to Xi Jinping, was also appointed as the new premier.

All delegates on Friday handed Xi a third term as China's president and unanimously elected him head of the country's Central Military Commission. With this coronation, Xi Jinping will now become the longest-reigning leader of Communist China.
