US Slaps 104% Tariff on China; Beijing Says, “Will Never Accept This Kind of Bullying," Latest News: The White House on Tuesday announced a levy of 104% on goods from China, effective Wednesday, escalating trade tensions to a new level.

During a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt made the announcement, saying, "It was a mistake for China to retaliate. When America is punched, he punches back harder. That's why there will be 104 percent tariffs going into effect on China tonight... If China reaches out to make a deal, he will be incredibly gracious."

She reiterated that the new tariffs come as part of an ongoing initiative by the U.S. administration to address issues of trade imbalances and unfair trade practices that have led to job losses and economic challenges in America, ANI reported.

Speaking about President Trump's firm stance on improving the American economy, she said, "President Trump made it very clear that the era of American economic surrender is over. President Trump is no longer going to allow American workers and companies to be ripped off at the hands of foolish trade practices that shift away millions of high-paying jobs and hollow out communities across the country."

She criticized the Chinese government for exploiting American workers and called China's reciprocal tariffs a “mistake.”

"Countries like China, who have chosen to retaliate and try to double down on their mistreatment of American workers, are making a mistake. President Trump has a spine of steel, and he will not break, and America will not break under his leadership.”

Leavitt further stated that President Trump had not considered any 'extension or delay' of the tariffs. However, she added that he 'is willing to pick up the phone and talk.' It remains unclear whether this statement was directed specifically at China or applied to all countries.

In her briefing, she shared that about 70 countries have approached the U.S. President for negotiations since his sweeping tariff announcement on April 2, a day now referred to as Liberation Day.

She further said, “"The reciprocal tariff rates that were implemented by country were focused on the monetary tariff that those countries have imposed on the US but also the non-monetary tariff barriers."

In response to the 104% tariffs, China said it would take "resolute and effective measures" to safeguard its rights and interests, calling the U.S. move an act of "bullying," according to Reuters.

"The U.S. continues to abuse tariffs to pressure China, China firmly opposes this and will never accept this kind of bullying," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jiantold a regular news conference, as per the report published in the Reuter.

Lin also expressed that if the US genuinely wants to solve the issue through negotiation, the US must adopt an attitude of ‘equality, respect and mutual benefit.’
