Canada Warns of Retaliation Against US Tariffs with Threats to Energy, Mineral Exports

Canada Warns of Retaliation Against US Tariffs with Threats to Energy, Mineral Exports latest news: Canada’s Ontario Premier, Doug Ford, has warned the U.S. of retaliation if it imposes the expected tariffs on Canada.

In an interview with NBC on Monday afternoon, Premier Doug Ford stated that for the sake of both the American and Canadian people, President Trump needs to pull back, when asked whether he sees any hope for a delay in the tariffs.
He said,"It is going to be an absolute disaster for both countries. We are the largest trading partner. I don’t want to respond, but we will respond like they have never seen before.

You need our uranium, our potash, and our high-grade nickel. I will stockpile our high-grade nickel, which accounts for 50% of your military and manufacturing needs, along with your aluminum, steel, and lumber.

It will be an absolute disaster, and this is all due to one person—President Trump. I have talked to countless Republican and Democratic governors, senators, and members of Congress. I love the U.S.; I lived there for 20 years. They are all saying this is the craziest thing someone could ever do. It is going to create massive problems."

Ford emphasized that retaliatory actions are not his first choice but might become necessary. “It is the last thing I want to do,” he added.

Meanwhile, President Trump announced on Monday that a 25-percent tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada will take effect on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters at the White House earlier, Trump was asked if there was anything Canada could do to try and hold off the tariffs. He responded, "No room left for Mexico or Canada. They’re all set; they go into effect tomorrow."

Trump’s Tariff Decision: According to a report published in Shine on February 1, President Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25-percent tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, along with a 10-percent tariff increase specifically targeting Canadian energy products.

Reports suggest that Trump is taking this step to pressure Mexico and Canada into enforcing stricter measures to combat illegal migration and drug trafficking into the U.S.
