Taiwan Earthquake Today: One feared dead, dozens injured as Taiwan sees powerful quake in 25 years

Taiwan Earthquake Today: In a shocking development, at least one person was feared dead while nearly 60 were injured Wednesday due to a powerful earthquake in Taiwan that caused damage to dozens of buildings and even prompted tsunami warnings, extended to Japan and the Philippines before being lifted.

As per the officials, the earthquake and series of strong aftershocks are being considered the most powerful in decades.

"The earthquake is close to land and it's shallow. It's felt all over Taiwan and offshore islands," said Wu Chien-fu, director of Taipei's Central Weather Administration's Seismology Center.

The island is regularly hit by earthquakes as it is reportedly located near the junction of two tectonic plates. Wu Chien Flu also said the quake was the strongest since one of the 7.6-magnitude strikes in September 1999 in which around 2,400 people were killed.

Wednesday's earthquake's magnitude was 7.4 which emerged just before 8:00 am local time, with the United States Geological Survey putting the epicenter 18 kilometers south of Taiwan's Hualien City, at a depth of 34.8 kilometers.
