Uttarakhand: Major traffic disruptions due to snowfall; govt arranges food, stay, bonfires for tourists
Meanwhile, efforts to restore main highways and link roads are continuing on a war footing by the administration in Uttarkashi.
Uttarakhand: Heavy snowfall across various parts of Uttarakhand has disrupted traffic, prompting the state government to take safety measures for tourists, ANI reported.
The Uttarakhand government has identified safe locations, including homestays and hotels, for tourists to stay, as a proactive step taken under the directions of District Magistrate Prashant Verma. Additionally, essential facilities such as food, drinking water, heating arrangements (bonfires), and medical assistance have been ensured for tourists at these locations.
District Magistrate Prashant Verma told ANI that the preparations were made a day earlier based on the weather alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). However, he added, “The snowfall was more than expected.”
He said that due to the heavier-than-expected snowfall, some problems were faced, but despite the hurdles, the administration ensured the safety of tourists by accommodating them in hotels.
Traffic movement was closed last evening at 6 pm and is now being reopened. Verma said that all main roads and national highways are expected to be opened for traffic by 3 pm at the latest.
Meanwhile, efforts to restore main highways and link roads are continuing on a war footing by the administration in Uttarkashi.
