Stone quarry collapsed at Sonbhadra Mine; Several Workers Still Trapped, Rescue Operation Underway
Considering the seriousness of the incident, the SP said that NDRF and SDRF teams were called to the spot the same night
A stone quarry has collapsed at a mine in Sonbhadra’s Obra region in Uttar Pradesh, killing one worker, while several others from “Krishna Mining Workers” remain trapped, according to SP Abhishek Verma.
SP Verma told ANI that police received information late yesterday evening that a huge boulder had fallen on several workers at the mine site in Obra. Local police and the administration reached the spot immediately.
“I reached the incident site along with ADG Kashi Zone, IG, Mirzapur Commissioner and the DM, and rescue operations were started immediately,” SP Verma added.
According to PTI and the hindu, 10 bodies in total are feared trapped.
Considering the seriousness of the incident, the SP said that NDRF and SDRF teams were called to the spot the same night, and the rescue operation began.
“We have recovered the dead body of a worker and sent it to the mortuary, and the rest of the workers stuck under the boulder are being rescued,” he further stated.
An FIR has been registered at Obra Police Station after recording statements from witnesses.
“A wall inside the Krishna Mines quarry in Billi Markundi village of Obra suddenly caved in, trapping the workers. Some workers are feared trapped under the debris,” a government official is quoted as saying in The Hindu report.
The Hindu report said citing locals that at least 10 people were present at the site when the incident occurred. “The process of drilling holes in the rock was ongoing using machines when a portion of a rock cracked and collapsed,” one eyewitness said, speaking to mediapersons.
