Western Command celebrates Army day

Chandigarh: The Western Command celebrated 70th Army Day on 15 Jan 18 at Chandimandir by paying homage to the gallant soldiers who laid down their lives for the Nation.

The Army Day also commemorates beginning of a new era of the taking over of reins of the Indian Army by an Indian General KM Cariappa who succeeded the last British Commander in Chief, General Francis Roy Butcher on this very day in 1948. General KM Cariappa became the first Commander-in-Chief of Independent India.

In a solemn ceremony at Veer Smriti at Chandimandir Lieutenant General GS Dhillon, AVSM, YSM, SM, Chief of Staff, Headquarters Western Command laid the wreath on behalf of all ranks of Western Army.

In his speech Lieutenant General GS Dhillon, exhorted all ranks to uphold the Saga of valour, sacrifice, duty and the highest traditions of the Indian Army. On this day the Western Army reaffirms its commitment and firm resolve in ensuring safety, security and sanctity of borders as well as aid to the civil authorities.
