Batala: An undertrial freed in a Bollywood style by five car occupants who when two policemen were taking him to the local court.

Jail inmate Harvinder Singh, whose name figures in a murder case, had been brought here from Hoshiarpur in a Punjab Roadways bus and was being taken to a local court in an autorickshaw by two cops, Vijay Kumar and Sunil Kumar. An I-20 car intercepted the vehicle at a railway crossing on the Batala-Gurdaspur road.

Police sources said the I-20 occupants threw chilli powder in the cops’ eyes and pulled a handcuffed Harvinder into the car before speeding away.

Sources said the cops had not ruled out the involvement of members of Nabha jail escapee Vicky Gounder’s gang, particularly after the recent arrest of his key aide, Gian Kharal, from Gurdaspur.
