News, Punjab

One of the largest truckers' bodies in the country has announced its decision to go on a nationwide two-day strike to protest against GST, diesel price hike and corruption on roads.

"Transporters have decided to lodge their protest against the callous and indifferent attitude of government officials, GST, diesel hike and corruption on road by observing 'chakka jam' on October 9 and 10," All India Motor Transport Congress(AIMTC) president S K Mittal said.

Charan Singh Lohara, the president of the state’s biggest body of truckers, Ludhiana Goods Transport Association (LGTA), claimed complete ‘chakka jam’ as part of the nationwide protest against callous attitude of the government towards their demands.

All India Transporters Welfare Association has also extended support to the strike call by the AIMTC. Reportedly, over 90 lakh truckers are observing the strike across the country.

The truck operators are sore over the government has failed to provide clarity on to them on the GST resulting in alleged double taxation and coercive compliance of this new tax regime, said JC Aggarwal, General Secretary LGTA.
