Congress’ Punjab unit chief Sunil Jakhar was headed for a massive victory as he secured an unassailable lead of over 1,82,000 votes over his nearest BJP rival Swaran Salaria in the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha bypoll, where counting of votes began at 8 am on Sunday.
GST also seemed to have hit the saffron party hard in trading towns of Batala and Pathankot, where Jakhar took a commutative lead of 7,000 votes, the observers said.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders started leaving the counting centres after Jakhar
took an early lead. Aam Aadmi Party candidate Major Gen Khajuria,
meanwhile, may lose his security deposit. Khajuria left the counting
centre midway through the counting.
