PU campus Election scene has been kaleidoscopic, changing over the years

News, Punjab

Colourful banners, cheering, clapping crowds and competitive slogans, it is that time of the year again when preparations are underway for the elections to the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) and similar bodies in city colleges.

With just three days left for the campus elections, let’s take a look at how from only two student leaders based parties, like SOPU (Student Organisation of Panjab University) and PUSU (Panjab University Student's Union), in 2017, the entire election scenario has changed.

In 1977, when Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) and similar bodies in city colleges were ruled by only SOPU and PUSU, then it was in 2013, the first time Congress affiliated NSUI entered the varsity’s political scene and won Council President's post.

The party held in the same position in 2014 also. Then in 2105, Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal)'s student wing SOI surprised everyone and for the first time won the PUCSC president seat.

Last year, Students For Society (SFS) shocked everyone after their presidential candidate Amritpal Singh bagged 2494 votes, giving tough competition to the big names like NSUI, SOI, PUSU and ABVP.
