Chandigarh: A local court dismissed the bail plea of Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu and issued non-bailable warrants against him on Wednesday for failing to appear before the court in a case of unlawful assembly and disobedience.
He repeatedly filed exemption applications, stating that he had to attend an official meeting of MPs and would be unable to make it for the hearing. Despite his counsel submitting an undertaking, stating that he will be present at the hearing on August 16, the accused had already missed over three hearings.
In 2011, Bittu was booked by under Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). According to the allegations, he took out a procession and raised slogans while Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) was imposed by the district magistrate.
He and 250 workers of the Youth Congress gathered near gate number 1 of PGIMER, despite being briefed about the restrictions.
Section 144 of the CrPC empowers an executive magistrate to prohibit an assembly of more than four people in an area.
A case was registered on the complaint of sub-inspector Eram Rizvi on March 7, 2011, at Sector-11 police station.
