Chandigarh: First time officially breaking its silence over the murder of eminent journalist K J Singh and his mother Gurcharan Kaur, Mohali police today held a press conference to release the CCTV footage of five persons moving suspiciously a day before the double murder in the locality where deceased house was located.
Speaking to the media persons, a senior police official said that the team of police officials engaged in the probe of KJ Singh murder case has analysed all the available footage from the CCTV cameras installed in the 3B2 where KJ Singh used to live with his mother.
"After carefully examining the footage, we have come out with grabs of five persons moving in the locality in a doubtful manner", said the police officer. He said that investigating team had analysed the available footage of 48 hours before the murder and of some hours of the post murder period.
"We have shown the video grabs of these five persons to all the shopkeepers in the locality and other people living there. They have told us that these were not familiar faces in the locality and were not seen frequenting the area.
That made the investigating team zero-in on these persons", said the police official. Of the five persons, two are with turbans. One turbaned person appears to be medium height with his age appearing to be around 25 years. Other one person in a blue jean is well built and the person accompanying him is of above average height.
There is one other person with a yellowish tea shirt and appearing to 6 feet tall. Other turbaned person appears to be wearing a blue colour check shirt.KJ Singh, who was unmarried and his mother were found murdered in the morning of September 23. They used to live together.
KJ Singh, who had served in a good number of English dailies, had retired some years ago from The Tribune as its Chief News Editor. He was known as one of the best english copy editor as well as rewriter of the copy. A large number of sub-editors learnt the art of editing copy and page making from him in Indian Express, The Tribune and Times of the India.
As his murder had rattled a vast section of media, the Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had set up a Special Investigation Team(SIT) to probe his and his mother's murder case. Police questioned a large number of persons including his family members in connection with his murder case. It was suspected that some insider is involved in the double murder case. Police also probed the property angle. But the probe did not make much headway. A car owned by KJ Singh was taken away by killers. Car has not been located till date.
At last, the police had to release the video footage of suspects today. In fact, the police had released the footage to all police officials including all SHOs on its own Whatsapp group in the state before releasing it to the media. It had also shown the footage to criminals lodged in various jails and also called history sheeters to identify the suspects in the footage.
