Farmer kills himself because of debt burden

Bathinda: A 45-year-old farmer, Bhagwant Singh committed suicide by jumping before a train on the Bathinda-Dabwali railway track here today. He owed about Rs4 lakh to a bank. He owned 1.9 acres in Sangat village. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son. 

The Government Railway Police (GRP), after conducting proceedings under Section of 174 of the CrPC and postmortem examination, handed over the body to the family. 

Bhagwant’s brother Inderjeet Singh told the police that his brother was upset for some time because of the debt burden.

Shingara Singh Mann, district president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan), demanded Rs10 lakh in compensation and government job to a member of the farmer’s family, besides debt waiver.
