A viral video forced Chandigarh Police to take action against an erring cop

A viral video of a Chandigarh Police head constable who slapped and abused a man forced the authorities to suspend the erring cop. 

When questioned for using a mobile phone while driving, the head constable slapped the resident in Chandigarh on Friday.

Sumit Kumar, who was slapped by the cop, said that on Friday at 4:30 pm, he spotted the Chandigarh police head constable, Surinder Singh, driving a motorcycle while talking on the phone.

Kumar(29), who works as an event manager, said he shot the video at the Sector 36/37 road, Chandigarh. He said he was returning from the DPI office in Sector 9 he spotted the policeman talking on the mobile phone while driving.

“When I confronted him about the traffic rule violation, he slapped me,” he added. The head constable was not even wearing the helmet properly and had just kept it on his head.

“When a common man does the same, he is challaned. But if a policemen does it, he slaps the complainant!” Kumar, who later filed a written complaint about the incident, said.

Congress leader Manish Tewari, in his tweet, asked Chandigarh DGP to take strict action.

In his tweet, Tewari, said, “DGP Chandigarh Tejinder LUTHRA ji if video in this tweet is true plz suspend this police official for assaulting a Citizen (sic).” Taking action against the constable, Chandigarh traffic police on Saturday challaned him for not wearing a helmet while driving and also talking on the mobile phone while driving.

The erring cop, posted with the security wing of the Chandigarh police, has been placed under suspension.
