A 19 year old Sikh girl joins New Zealand Police

News, Punjab

Fortune favors the brave and the 19 year old Punjabi origin girl made the community proud by entering New Zealand Police. She has recently joined the police and today she got his first posting to serve the people of New Zealand.

Prabhdeep gave credit of her success to her mother Hardeep Kaur. She hailed from the village Bajwa Kalan in Jalandhar district and she migrated to Canada with her parents when she was two year old.

She had a dream to join police and she made it. She wrote on her Facebook account, “it’s been a while in the making and we made it.”

She worked hard to join the police. A regular practice of cross country and swimming made her to clear the police exam. Prabhdeep wanted to do something for the Punjabi community especially she wanted to serve the girls of the society.

Another Punjabi women in New Zealand police too

Mandeep Kaur had made history as the first Indian female police officer who joined the New Zealand Police in 2004 and started her career in Henderson before moving to Counties Manukau in 2007.

"It feels like I've come home," she said.

"My childhood dream was to become a police officer but back in India that was not a job encouraged for women."

Being able to speak three languages - English, Punjabi and Hindi - puts her in good stead to positively engage with the community across Auckland thanks to its growing diversity she believes.

"There is an under-reporting culture among ethnic communities so I want to encourage them to have trust and confidence in the police," said Mandeep.

Having come to New Zealand as an immigrant herself at the age of 26, Kaur says she's lived many of the same experiences immigrants face in a new place.
