National Green Honors: Punjab and Hoshiarpur Lead at CSE Awards
Punjab has clinched the "Best State" award for the third consecutive year under the Green School Programme (GSP), an initiative by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE). The state accounted for over 84% of the total submissions in audit registrations and report submissions across 28 states and union territories.
According to the GSP Audit 2025–26 results, 6,264 schools from Punjab submitted audit reports, with 237 institutions earning the prestigious 'green' rating. Nationwide, 433 schools were honoured as the country's "greenest", meaning Punjab alone accounts for over 54% of the top-rated schools in India.
Hoshiarpur also maintained its dominance, retaining the "Best District" title for the second year in a row with 947 report submissions.
CSE Director General Sunita Narain praised the initiative and said that the programme allows students to measure and benchmark their environmental footprint to make a visible difference.
Tushita Rawat, programme manager at CSE, noted a growing trend among schools toward lower resource use and the adoption of conservation measures.
The audit revealed that 86% of submissions came from government schools, highlighting their leadership in sustainability. Key practices recognised included the use of non-polluting transport, energy-efficient lighting, and rainwater harvesting. Satya Bharti School in Tungaheri, Ludhiana, was specifically recognised as a "Changemaker" in the primary category.
