Chandigarh Mayor Election 2024: BJP's Manoj Sonkar becomes new Mayor

Chandigarh Mayor Election 2024 News Today: As directed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh mayoral polls were held on January 30 and Manoj Sonkar of the Bharatiya Janata Party has become the new Mayor of the city.

According to information, as many as 8 votes were declared invalid due to which the calculations changed.

For the Bharatiya Janata Party, Manoj Sonkar was the candidate for the Mayor post while Kuljeet Sandhu was contesting for Senior Deputy Mayor and Rajinder Sharma was up for Deputy Mayor. For the Congress and AAP alliance, AAP's Kuldeep Singh was up for the Mayor post, while Congress' Gurpreet Singh and Nirmala Devi were up against the Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively. 

Earlier, the Chandigarh Administration had announced that the Mayor Election 2024 will be held on February 6 after the elections were deferred on January 18. Back then, Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh, had announced the new date for Chandigarh's Mayoral Polls which were earlier supposed to be held on January 18. 

As per the earlier order issued by Vinay Pratap Singh, Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh, "the meeting for the election of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor, and Deputy Mayor will now be held at Assembly Hall of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation on February 6, 2024 at 11 am."

However, the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the Chandigarh administration to conduct mayoral polls on January 30. 

Notably, Chandigarh Mayor Elections 2024 was being considered the first round of 'The BJP vs INDIA' alliance ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. 

This year, AAP and the Congress party formed an alliance under which, AAP fought for the mayor's seat while the Congress contested for senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor posts.

In the 35-member Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, the BJP had 14 councillors while Aam Aadmi Party had 13 councillors, and the Congress had 7. On the other hand. the Shiromani Akali Dal had one councillor in the House.
