In a major breakthrough in the ongoing drive to make Punjab a safe and secure state, the Counter Intelligence (CI) wing in Amritsar has busted a Pakistan-backed cross-border arms smuggling module with the arrest of one operative, recovering five sophisticated pistols, Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav said in an official release.
The arrested individual has been identified as Sandeep Singh, a resident of Khalra village in Tarn Taran district. The seized weapons include four .30 bore pistols with magazines and one 9mm pistol with a magazine. Police have also impounded his Royal Enfield (Bullet) motorcycle, allegedly used to transport consignments.
DGP Yadav said initial investigations revealed that Sandeep Singh and his wanted associate Saifli Singh had been retrieving weapon consignments from near the Indo-Pak border on the directions of a Pakistan-based handler, who used drones to drop the weapons. The duo then supplied the arms to criminals and gangsters in Punjab, he added.
Operation Details:
CI Amritsar had received specific intelligence regarding the retrieval of a large consignment of illegal weapons from an area near village Khalra along the Indo-Pak border.
Acting swiftly, a CI-Amritsar team intercepted Sandeep Singh near village Thatha in Tarn Taran when he was allegedly on his way to deliver the consignment. The police recovered the weapons from his possession.
An FIR has been registered under Sections 25 and 25(1)(a) of the Arms Act and Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the State Special Operation Cell Police Station, Amritsar.
