Punjab Directs Strict Monitoring of Obscene Advertisements Under 1986 Indecent Representation Law

The Punjab government has initiated stricter enforcement of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986, directing authorities to take action against advertisements that depict women in an obscene or derogatory manner.

The Social Security, Women and Child Development Department expressed concern over instances of objectionable portrayal in media content and asked all television channels, newspapers, websites, web-based applications and audio-visual platforms to ensure compliance with the law.

The 1986 Act prohibits advertisements, publications, writings, paintings, figures or any form of representation that portray women indecently. The law also provides for penalties, including fines and imprisonment, for violations.

Minister for Social Security, Women and Child Development Dr Baljeet Kaur directed District Programme Officers to take suo motu cognisance of violations and coordinate with the police for prompt legal action. Deputy Commissioners have also been asked to review such cases periodically at the district level, while the state government will monitor matters at the state level.
