Punjab CM Calls for Dialogue Amid Farmers’ Protest, Criticizes Centre’s Stance

'What Are You Waiting For?' Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Questions Centre on Farmers' Protest

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann to Centre on Farmers' Protest: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann took to Twitter urging the central government to initiate dialogue with the protesting farmers. In his strongly-worded tweet, Mann called out the Centre’s reluctance to engage with farmers’ organizations, emphasizing the urgency of resolving the ongoing crisis.

CM Mann’s tweet read: "The central government should abandon its old stubbornness and open the way for talks with the farmers' organizations... A cat does not run away when a pigeon winks.. I don't know what penance the central government is doing now?? If Modi ji can stop the war between Russia and Ukraine, then can't he talk to the breadwinners sitting 200 kilometers away? What are you waiting for..."

Farmers’ Protests Intensify

Farmers across Punjab and neighboring states have been protesting against what they describe as the Centre’s failure to address their demands, including minimum support price (MSP) guarantees. The protests, which began weeks ago, have seen intensified action with hunger strikes and large gatherings at key borders.

Punjab CM Mann’s remarks come amid growing concerns over the deteriorating health of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is currently on a fast-unto-death. The Punjab CM had previously appealed to Dallewal to end his hunger strike, urging the Centre to intervene.

Political Pressure Mounts

CM Mann’s criticism reflects mounting political pressure on the BJP-led central government. His comparison of the Centre’s efforts to mediate peace between Russia and Ukraine with its handling of domestic farmers’ issues underscores the discontent within Punjab and other agrarian states.

A Call for Resolution

As farmers’ protests continue, CM Mann’s appeal adds to the chorus of voices demanding action. Leaders from across the political spectrum have expressed solidarity with the farmers, with Mann emphasizing the critical role of farmers as the backbone of the nation.

The Punjab government has reiterated its commitment to supporting the farmers and has called for the Centre to prioritize their concerns. The ongoing stalemate, however, remains a critical issue that threatens to escalate further without meaningful dialogue.

The ball now lies in the Centre’s court as citizens, activists, and political leaders watch closely for a resolution.
