Chandigarh News: Pargat Singh Accuses BJP of ‘Full-Scale Attempt' to Snatch Chandigarh from Punjab

Chandigarh News: Padma Shri & Arjuna awardee, MLA Pargat Singh from Jalandhar Cantt, Punjab, levelled serious allegations against the BJP and its Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, calling it a “full-scale attempt to snatch Chandigarh from Punjab” on Saturday.

Pargat Singh, also the Former Education & Sports Minister, Punjab, in a post on his X said, “BJP’s Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill exposes its real agenda — a full-scale attempt to snatch Chandigarh from Punjab.”

Singh called it an "assault" and claimed that it has been in the making, citing four reasons as “Pushing for a separate Haryana Assembly inside Chandigarh, Plotting to convert Panjab University into a Central University, Reducing Punjab-cadre officers in Chandigarh Administration, and Dissolving Panjab University’s elected Senate.

“And now — using Article 240 to turn Chandigarh into a regular UT, completely severed from Punjab,” he added.
Pargat Singh called the amendment a “direct, blatant, unconstitutional attack" on Punjab’s capital and federal rights.

Singh also called out Punjab’s present CM Bhagwant Mann for staying silent on the issues.

“From saffronising education to undermining Punjab’s dams — and now Chandigarh — the Centre is consistently dismantling Punjab’s identity. Meanwhile, Bhagwant Mann govt remains silent, echoing Delhi instead of defending Punjab,” Singh leveled.

“Chandigarh was built for Punjab. #Chandigarh belongs to Punjab. No government, no bill, no political deal can erase history or Punjab’s rightful claim,” he affirmed.

CM Mann opposes the bill:

In a strong worded post on CM Mann's X, he wrote, "We strongly oppose the proposed Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill being brought by the Central Government in the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament. This amendment is against the interests of Punjab. We will not allow the conspiracy being hatched by the Central Government against Punjab to succeed. Chandigarh, built by razing our Punjab's villages, belongs solely to Punjab. We will not let our right slip away just like that. For this, we will take whatever steps are necessary."
