Mohali Gets its first Human Milk Bank, Milk to be stored for 6 Months

Human Milk Bank in Mohali

MOHALI: The First human milk bank has been set up in Mohali district of Punjab. The human milk bank is being established at Dr. BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in Phase-6. It will be started in the next 2 months. The medical college has set a target to start this human milk bank in the month of August.

It is necessary for a child to drink the first condensed milk of the mother within half an hour of birth, but for some health reason, many children gets deprived of this milk. This becomes the reason of malnutrition in children. Keeping this in view, human milk banks are being opened in many cities. Mother's milk is available in these banks in the same way as we go to a blood bank to collect blood. The central government and the state government provide funding for setting up such banks.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) Medical College is in the process of purchasing necessary machinery and equipment related for setting up a Human Milk Bank.

Notably, The Milk bank will be established in the mother and child care unit of the hospital. Earlier, there was no such milk bank in the district. Although a human milk bank has been established in Chandigarh PGI. But Panchkula and Mohali, which are part of Tricity, do not have this facility so far. But now, Mohali has also got this facility.
