Punjab Bus Strike: 2-Hour Strike Announced For May 20 Amid Unmet Demands and Salary Delays

Punjab Roadways PRTC PUNBUS Bus Strike Tomorrow Latest News Today: Commuters across Punjab relying on government-run buses should brace for disruptions as a statewide two-hour strike has been announced for tomorrow, May 20, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The protest is being organized by employees of Punjab Roadways and PUNBUS in response to unfulfilled promises and continued salary delays for workshop employees.

Background of the Protest

The announcement follows a crucial meeting held on May 15, 2025, between representatives of the employees’ union and senior officials, including the Punjab Transport Minister, the State Transport Secretary, the Director State Transport, and the Managing Director of PRTC. During the meeting, various employee demands were discussed, and authorities reportedly agreed to them, assuring that a policy had already been formulated and forwarded to the Finance Department. However, a scheduled meeting with the Finance Department, expected to finalize key decisions, was canceled, leaving employees disheartened. A follow-up meeting was held today, May 19, with transport department personnel, but conclusive action remains pending.

Nationwide Strike Postponed, New Date Set

In a related development, the nationwide strike that was earlier scheduled for May 20, 2025, has now been postponed to July 9, 2025. Nonetheless, the organization will continue to support district-level sit-ins in front of DC offices across Punjab tomorrow.

Salary Delays Trigger Additional Unrest

Adding fuel to the fire is the pending salary of workshop employees of PUNBUS, which has not been disbursed despite multiple reminders. If salaries are not credited by the evening of May 19, a statewide protest will be held tomorrow, involving closure of bus stands for two hours during the strike window.

Furthermore, if no action is taken, the union has threatened to escalate the protest starting May 21, by completely blocking the Punbus routes across Punjab and launching an intensified struggle.

Union's Stand

The employee union noted that while the department has shown positive intent during discussions, inaction and delays, particularly regarding salaries, are forcing their hand. "The government cannot expect workers to remain silent while their families suffer without pay. We will continue our struggle until our legitimate demands are met,” a union spokesperson stated.
