IGP Umranangal Arrested in Behbal Kalaan Firing Incident

In a major development in the Behbal Kalaan firing incident in this afternoon, IGP Paramraj Singh Umranangal was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Chandigarh. Two young Sikh protesting peacefully were killed in the firing. Umranangal’s arrest comes after Former Moga district police chief SSP Charanjit Sharma’s arrest last month. Sharma was the first police officer arrested since the SIT probe started in 2015.

The SIT had summoned Umranangal on February the 13 th , for questioning. Till date, other officers including IG Jatinder Jain, IG Amar Singh Chahal, SP Paramjit Singh Pannu and SDM Harjit Sandhu have also been summoned, but Umranangal faced the longest questioning. All these officers were on duty on 14 th October 2015, when the police fired at peaceful protestors.

 IGP Paramraj has been alleged to direct the police force under his orders to use fire arms on the
protesters, who were sitting at the main chowk of Kotkapura on 14 th October 2015.
Umranangal was reportedly trying to leave the country. He had visitor’s visa of countries like USA, UK,
and Canada, and was about to fly away from Chandigarh Airport.
