Punjab Police Nabs Drug Smuggler with Heroin; Suspect Fires at Cops, Injured in Retaliatory Fire
Punjab Police on Monday arrested an alleged drug smuggler from Amritsar and recovered 234 grams of heroin from his possession. The accused, identified as Harpreet Happy, was taken to a hospital for treatment following a chase and exchange of fire.
According to police, an FIR had already been registered against Harpreet on June 11, and an earlier attempt to arrest him near Neshta led to a tragic incident where one of his associates opened fire at the police, resulting in the death of an innocent bystander.
Speaking to ANI, SSP (Rural) Maninder Singh said,“An FIR was registered on June 11 against drug smuggler Harpreet Happy, and five kilograms of heroin had been recovered from him. When police tried to stop him near Neshta, his accomplice fired at the police, and unfortunately, a bystander was killed in the crossfire.”
He added,“Today, acting on specific intelligence, we again tried to nab Harpreet Happy. During the operation, he fired two shots at the police party and was injured in retaliatory fire. We have recovered 534 grams of heroin from him. Further investigation is underway.”
The case highlights the continued crackdown by Punjab Police on drug trafficking networks.
