Amritsar Airport's Lack of Passenger Amenities Causes Inconvenience

Amritsar Airport's Lack of Passenger Amenities Causes Inconvenience, Latest News:
The lack of passenger amenities at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Amritsar, has made headlines once again. This time, Sameep Singh Gumtala, Global Convener of the FlyAmritsar Initiative and Overseas Secretary of AVM, experienced the inconvenience during his recent flight and it may not be his first time experiencing such inconveniences at the airport.

Basic amenities like baggage trolleys and wheelchair assistance at the departure terminal have been an ongoing issue, causing difficulties for passengers. The matter came to light once again when Gumtala, along with his family, faced these issues during their flight to Dubai, as reported by Babushahi.

Gumtala shared that when he and his family arrived at the airport around 6:25 AM, there were no trolleys available near the departure entrance. With three bags for check-in, two carry-ons, and laptop bags, they had to carry everything into the terminal themselves.
“It was shocking to see passengers walking all the way to the arrival terminal side just to find a trolley, or dragging multiple pieces of luggage. There were no signs, no staff, and no clear instructions on where to find trolleys or wheelchairs at the departure terminal. We expect better from an international airport where crores are spent on infrastructure, and passengers are charged fees, yet basic needs like Wi-Fi and proper assistance are being ignored,” said Gumtala.
He further suggested that airport staff should be assigned to manage and refill trolleys, with a dedicated and clearly marked pickup zone. “If needed, install automated paid systems — this would prevent misuse and ensure trolleys are available when truly needed.”

Additionally, Gumtala highlighted the struggles of handicapped passengers at the departure terminal. “In some cases, the porters or helpers who appear demand excessive money from passengers, taking advantage of their vulnerability,” he added.
This issue has been raised multiple times with airport officials. “We were assured that trolleys were being procured, but what use are a few hundred trolleys if they aren’t managed properly during peak hours?” he said.

He emphasized that “small yet critical facilities like trolleys, Wi-Fi, and proper assistance for the differently-abled must not be overlooked.”
The organizations are now officially urging the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and Amritsar Airport Director, Sh. S.K. Kapahi, to take prompt and effective action to address these issues, ensuring the convenience, dignity, and safety of all passengers, according to the report.
