Punjab: Relief From Scorching Heat, Orange Alerts Issued for Several Districts
Punjab Chandigarh Latest Weather Updates: Punjab had been reeling under extreme heat for the past several days, but yesterday’s light showers, cloudy skies, and gusty winds brought some much-needed respite from the scorching temperatures. The region had been witnessing severe to extreme heatwave conditions, along with warm nights, similar to many other parts of northern India.
Following yesterday’s weather changes, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that heatwave conditions have abated across the entire north Indian region, except in eastern Uttar Pradesh, where isolated places continued to experience heatwave conditions.
In Punjab, IMD Chandigarh noted a drop of 1.9°C in the average minimum temperature on June 16 compared to June 15. However, the average minimum temperature still remains 2.9°C above normal for the state. The lowest minimum temperature recorded in the state was 24.7°C at KVK Pathankot (AWS).
Rainfall over the past 24 hours included: 1.6 mm in Patiala, 0.3 mm in Gurdaspur, 0.5 mm each in Firozpur and KVK Pathankot (AWS).
Despite improved weather across much of North India on June 15, Bathinda Airport recorded the highest maximum temperature in Punjab at 42.2°C. Compared to June 14, there was a sharp drop of -4.9°C in the average maximum temperature, bringing it close to the normal range, according to IMD.
IMD Chandigarh issued an Orange Alert for three districts of Punjab for June 16, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, squalls, and strong surface winds, as per the update released on June 15.
In addition, the State Meteorological Department has issued Yellow Alerts for 10 districts — Gurdaspur, Nawanshahr, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, SAS Nagar, Sangrur, Barnala, Bathinda, Mansa, and Patiala — due to the forecast of thunderstorms, lightning, squalls, and heatwave conditions.
At national level, Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi BHU recorded the highest temperature in the country on June 15 at 43.2°C, which is 5.1°C above normal.
Meanwhile, the IMD stated that conditions are favourable for the advancement of the Southwest Monsoon into some parts of Gujarat, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha within the next few hours, some parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and East Uttar Pradesh over the next two days.
Additionally, the monsoon is likely to remain active over south peninsular India and the Konkan & Goa region till June 16, 2025.
