Issue of Disconnection of Power Supply in Punjab Govt Schools

Chandigarh 14th Feb: AAP MLA Aman Arora raised the issue of pending electricity bills and discontinuation of connections of Government schools in Punjab. Replying to his question, Gurpreet Singh, Minister of Power/ New and Renewable Energy Sources informed that out of a total sum of Rs 1684.87 lakhs, Rs 702.78 lakhs is pending, of all the 4130 primary, middle and high schools of Punjab.

It is to be noted that in lieu of unpaid electricity bills, electricity supply of 14 government schools have been disconnected. In response to Power Minister’s statement, Aman Arora stated the fact, that in the last session, Education Minister had given the count of government schools in Punjab to be 19289, and if according to the state4ment made by Power Minister, electricity supply is only for 4130 schools, it is a matter of concern how the remaining 15000 schools are functioning.

They might either be without electricity supply, or would be sourcing it illegally. The power Minister passed the ball in Education Minister on this matter, saying that he can answer better on this. Seeing the matter alleviate, the speaker also enquired about the source of electricity for as many as 15000 schools, from the Power Minister.

MLA Aman Arora requested the Chief Minister via speaker, to waiver the pending electricity bills amounting Rs 70 Crores. The Power Minister assured the House saying that even if there was no proposal of such a waiver in consideration, he would discuss with the Chief Minister.
