CHANDIGARH: In a recent announcement, the Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India, has formally appointed Justice Ritu Bahri as the Acting Chief Justice of the esteemed Punjab and Haryana High Court. Justice Ritu Bahri is slated to assume the responsibilities of this crucial role, commencing from the upcoming Saturday.

Currently, Justice Ravi Shankar Jha presides as the Chief Justice in Court No. 13 of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and is set to retire on October 13, paving the way for Justice Ritu Bahri to step into this prominent position.

Hailing from the city of Jalandhar, Justice Ritu Bahri was born in the year 1962. She acquired her legal education from Panjab University, Chandigarh, and successfully completed her studies in law in 1985. Subsequently, in 1986, she was duly registered with the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Council, embarking on a legal career that has spanned decades.

The legal lineage of Justice Ritu Bahri is notable, with her father, Justice Amrit Lal Bahri, having served as the Chief Justice and retired from the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1994. Additionally, her grandfather, the late Somdutt Bahri, was a distinguished personality, hailing from Shimla. Notably, she represented the Shimla Vidhan Sabha constituency of Punjab as an MLA from 1952 to 1957, besides her role as a respected lawyer.
