SC Rejects the plea to commute Rajoana’s Death Sentence in Beant Singh Assassination Case

Balwant Singh Rajoana

New Delhi: Balwant Singh Rajoana, accused of the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, has not received relief from the Supreme Court.  The SC on Wednesday declined the plea of Babbar Khalsa terrorist Balwant Singh Rajoana. The Shiromani Committee had filed a mercy petition in the Supreme Court to change Rajoana's death sentence to life imprisonment.

Notably, The Supreme Court has asked the competent authority (Ministry of Home Affairs) to take an early decision on Balwant Singh Rajoana's mercy plea.

It is worth mentioning here that Balwant Singh Rajoana has been in jail for almost 27 years. Rajoana was sentenced to death by the court in 1995 for the murder of then Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh. He filed a mercy plea in 2012, which is pending with the central government. No decision has been taken by the Home Ministry to commute his death sentence to life imprisonment.
