CM Launches Punjab Health Insurance Scheme: Free INR 10 Lakh Cover for Families
Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh announced in a press conference that Punjab’s Chief Minister’s Health Insurance Scheme will be implemented from January 15, 2026. Under the scheme, free medical treatment worth up to INR 10 lakh per family will be provided.
Dr Balbir Singh said that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, along with AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal, will formally launch the programme on the announced date. This marks a major expansion of universal healthcare coverage in the state. According to him, the initiative aims to benefit all residents of Punjab, covering approximately 6.5 million families without any income limit, making the state a frontrunner in comprehensive health assurance.
Dr Balbir Singh further explained that more than 9,000 Common Service Centres (CSCs) will distribute health cards, and several camps will be organised for enrolment.
He added that once an individual is registered and issued a card, they will become eligible for cashless and free treatment at empanelled hospitals across Punjab. Dr Balbir Singh emphasised that eligibility will be on the basis of Aadhaar or voter ID cards as sufficient proof to simplify access for citizens.
He said the scheme’s operational rollout over the next four months will ensure nearly the entire population is covered through the universal health insurance framework.
