AAP Punjab Resolves to Bring Justice to MGNREGA Workers; Holds Special Session to Address Issues
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab MLAs have launched a campaign to raise the voices and demands of over 10 lakh MGNREGA worker families in the state, standing firm with the poor as the Central Government brings changes to the original scheme, including a name change to G RAM G, removing Mahatma Gandhi from the title.
During a special session of the Punjab Assembly held towards the end of 2025, AAP MLAs brought lakhs of letters written by MGNREGA workers. The letters narrated the pain and struggles of hardworking families who sustain their lives through work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA).
MGNREGA workers were also present in the Punjab Assembly during the special session.
The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has resolved to send letters directly to the Prime Minister to bring to the notice of the Central Government the real condition of workers on the ground and to demand immediate solutions to their problems.
MGNREGA workers in Punjab face several serious issues, ranging from delays in the payment of wages, affecting their livelihoods, to not getting work on time, forcing them into unemployment.
The Punjab government alleges that due to the Central Government’s failure to release MGNREGA funds on time, the implementation of the scheme has weakened, causing immense suffering to workers.
The campaign is a strategic effort by the CM Mann-led government to build pressure on the Central Government to ensure the timely release of MGNREGA funds so that workers receive their rightful dues.
