Punjab-Haryana Water Row Deepens After BBMB Director Transferred, Security Tightened at Nangal Dam
The move comes just days after the BBMB approved the release of 8,500 cusecs of water to Haryana, a decision Punjab strongly opposed.
Punjab-Haryana Water Controversy, BBMB Director Transfer Latest News Today: In the middle of an escalating water-sharing dispute between Punjab and Haryana, the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has executed a key bureaucratic reshuffle, transferring Punjab cadre official Akashdeep from his post as Director Water Regulation at BBMB Nangal. The decision has further inflamed tensions between the two states.
Akashdeep, who also held the post of Director NHP BBMB Chandigarh, has now been shifted to Director Dam Safety BBMB Nangal. In his place, Haryana cadre officer Sanjeev Kumar has been appointed as Director NHP and Director Water Regulation at BBMB Nangal—an appointment that Punjab officials are viewing with suspicion.
The move comes just days after the BBMB approved the release of 8,500 cusecs of water to Haryana, a decision Punjab strongly opposed. In response, the Punjab government has ramped up security around the Nangal Dam, deploying a significant police presence to monitor activities and prevent any unapproved water releases.
Sources say Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is preparing for a "tough political and legal battle" against the BJP-led Centre and Haryana government, determined to stop what he terms the unjust diversion of Punjab’s water resources.
