The political focus has shifted toward the rights of rural labourers in Punjab, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) positioning itself as a primary advocate for the state's workforce. AAP legislators have initiated a large-scale campaign to represent over 10 lakh MGNREGA worker families, whose livelihoods depend on the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

During a special session of the Punjab Assembly in early 2026, AAP MLAs brought forward lakhs of letters written by these workers. These documents highlight the personal struggles and financial distress of families reliant on the scheme. Notably, MGNREGA workers themselves were present at the Assembly to witness the proceedings.

The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has formally resolved to forward these letters directly to the Prime Minister. This move aims to inform the central government of the ground reality in Punjab and demand immediate intervention to address the systemic issues facing workers.

Among the several critical grievances, the most pressing issue remains the delay in wage payments, which severely impacts the survival of low-income families. Furthermore, many labourers report being unable to secure work on time, leading to forced unemployment. The Punjab administration contends that these issues stem from the central government’s failure to release MGNREGA funds promptly, which, according to them, weakens the scheme's local implementation.

"This initiative by the Aam Aadmi Party underscores its role as a voice for the poor and marginalised people of society."By escalating these concerns to the national level, the party seeks to pressure the Centre into ensuring that MGNREGA funds are disbursed in a timely manner, allowing workers to receive their legal dues.

Ultimately, this campaign serves as a public reaffirmation of the Aam Aadmi Party’s commitment to standing with the poor and labouring classes, ensuring their rights remain a priority in the state's political and administrative agenda.
